Week 1 of 6
Meet Your AI Friend
Students discover what AI is, practice asking questions, and learn the #1 safety rule.
🎯 Learning Objectives
By the end of this lesson, your child will be able to:
- Explain what AI is in their own words
- Name 2-3 AI assistants and what they do
- Ask AI a question and evaluate the quality of the answer
- Identify what personal information to never share with AI
📋 Lesson Flow
5 min
Warm-Up: "What Do You Think AI Is?"
Open discussion — students share what they know about AI. Most will mention Siri, Alexa, or robots. We meet them where they are.
15 min
Core Lesson: AI is a Tool, Not Magic
We explain AI with kid-friendly analogies ("a friend who read every book in every library"), demo a live AI conversation, and introduce the key idea: AI is helpful but not perfect.
15 min
Hands-On: The AI Question Game
Each student asks AI 5 questions (mix of fun and learning), then rates each answer. They discover firsthand that AI can be creative, helpful, and sometimes wrong.
5 min
Safety Lesson: Keep Your Secrets Safe
Interactive thumbs-up/down game teaching what's okay to share with AI (favorite color = yes, home address = no). One rule they'll never forget.
5 min
Wrap-Up + Take-Home Activity
Quick review, then homework: interview a family member about AI. Brings the conversation home and gets parents involved from day one.
Activity Spotlight
The AI Question Game — Students ask AI questions like "If dinosaurs were alive today, what jobs would they have?" and "Why is the sky blue?" They rate each answer on a 3-star scale, building critical evaluation skills while having fun. Every student walks away having had a real conversation with AI.
Safety First
Every Promptlings lesson includes an age-appropriate safety component. In Week 1, we establish the foundational rule: never share personal information with AI — including names, addresses, school names, or passwords. This rule is reinforced every session throughout the course.
What Your Child Takes Home
- Understanding: AI is a powerful tool — not magic, not scary, not perfect
- Skill: How to ask AI good questions and evaluate the answers
- Safety: What to never share with AI (and why)
- Homework: Interview a family member about AI — bringing the conversation home
Next week: Students create their first AI art and stories — turning from consumers into creators.
Ready to enroll?
This is just Week 1 of a 6-week journey. The Explorers path takes students from "What is AI?" to building their own chatbot. Small groups (max 4:1 ratio), live instruction, and real projects every session.
